A fishing tool designed to replace the predator fishing 'breakaway' method with a magnetic release mechanism.

The wels catfish, also known as the European catfish, is native to Europe and is the largest growing predator in Hungarian waters. Catching and landing it is a rather difficult and complex process. Tools developed for catching catfish were invented in Hungary already during the time of the Hungarian conquest, such as the 'kuttyogatófa' (catfish clonk). This is an old Hungarian invention, with which one can produce a sound similar to a catfish's feeding sound by hand. When operating the 'kuttyogató', catfish move towards the sound, thereby attracting anglers to their prey. This tool typically enhances boat-based catfish fishing methods, but numerous other techniques are available for catching catfish.

One such popular technique is the 'szakítós' (breakaway) or 'spanolós' (tensioned) method. The essence of this method is that the end of our main line, where the bait is, is tied to a specific object on the terrain, such as a bush, tree, etc., with a line of lower breaking strain. At the moment of a bite, this line breaks, and the fight can begin. The magnetic release device approaches this popular catfish fishing method from a different perspective. It is a revolutionary new solution that benefits not only anglers.

Unfortunately, outdated solutions have so far created numerous line residues in our waters. With existing breakaway methods, the fishing line used for breaking off often remains in the water, causing severe damage to our environment. This device also offers a solution to this problem, as it completely eliminates the need for single-use breakaway lines. The essence of the mechanism is that the release is created by a structure consisting of two float bodies with the help of magnets. Thanks to this, the mechanism releases upon a bite, and the fight can begin. At the end of the catch, you simply snap it back together, and fishing can continue.

THE METHOD

The 'szakítós' or 'spanolós' method works by tying the end tackle, which is at the end of the main line, to a scouted area where you want to fish, using a monofilament line with a much lower breaking strain than the main line. This area can be a reed bed, a bush, the base of a tree, a buoy, or even a weight placed on the seabed, etc. The fishing rod is then placed on the bank in a tensioned state from the tying point, which can be upright (thus the main line is pre-tensioned completely above the water), or laid flat (in which case it is pre-tensioned with a bite alarm having a heavier weight).

In case of a bite, the breakaway line breaks, and the fight begins. With this method, there is a greater chance of hooking the fish because there is a more direct connection between the end tackle and the fishing rod than with other tension-free floating or bottom fishing methods.

THE PROBLEMS IDENTIFIED

- This is a single-use method. If the line breaks, a new one must be tied. Unfortunately, the broken line ends usually cannot be found, and therefore anglers often leave the remaining line in the water after fishing.
- In the breakaway method using a weight placed on the seabed, the weight, which is usually a brick or paving stone, remains in the water after a bite. Anglers take in and leave as many weights as there are bites.
- If the bite and subsequent break occur in the dark, re-tying is more difficult and time-consuming, which further disturbs the water and can scare away the fish.
- Another problem can be that the line used for breaking may break prematurely. This can be a consequence of the line's breaking strain not being strong enough, and the angler may have to re-tie the system.
- After a bite, it is difficult and time-consuming to re-tie the rig to the same spot.
- If the desired fishing area is further away, which can be more than 300 meters into the water, it further compounds the possibilities of error. When deploying the bait, it disturbs the water and reduces the chances of catching when re-tying.

THE SOLUTION

The goal was to create a fishing tool that could replace the single-use monofilament line applied in the breakaway method with a permanent device.

The breaking of the line has been replaced by interrupting the magnetic field, thanks to which the fishing tackle can be easily reassembled after a bite.

The components are made of polymer materials that float on the surface of the water, making the tied element easy to find.

The solution is characterized by the fact that thanks to magnets fixed on the two elements, they connect magnetically, so under tension, the system releases, and the magnetic field ceases. After release, the system can be easily reassembled, so fishing can continue.
