Free-spool reels
Baitrunner reels are most commonly encountered during carp, predator, feeder, or catfish fishing. In terms of design, this means that the main drag system is located at the front of the reel, and the baitrunner system at the back. The strength of the baitrunner can be adjusted, or even switched on and off. We can adjust it with the drag force regulator located at the back of the reel, and its on/off switch is also at the back. The popularity of this reel lies, among other things, in the fact that if we leave our rod unattended - which, let's admit, is sometimes unavoidable - and we get a bite, we won't miss it, because thanks to the baitrunner, the fish can easily pull the line from the reel. Then, upon our return, by disengaging the baitrunner, the front drag takes over control again and we can begin fighting the fish. Due to higher load and increased line capacity, these reels are generally larger models. On the TackleBait Webshop, you will find baitrunner reels from size 2500 up to 4000, 6000 size, all the way to 14000 size, for example, from the offerings of Carp Zoom, Nevis, or Delphin.
The baitrunner reel has grown into one of the most popular and versatile reel types today, especially in the world of carp fishing. Its greatest advantage is that it allows the fish to pull line freely without the main drag system being activated. This function can be activated with the baitrunner switch, after which a finely adjustable, separately controllable drag force comes into play. This mechanism provides enormous safety: even with a powerful bite, there is no need to fear the rod landing in the water – the fish can take a few meters until we get there and strike.
In addition to boilie fishing, with the rise of the method feeder technique, the role of baitrunner reels has further increased. More and more people recognize their convenience and practicality, as the slowly, controlled line release can be useful not only for larger fish but also for variable bites. After switching the reel, we can immediately activate the main drag, so we can control the situation even with a quick reaction.
Baitrunner reels also differ in their size: smaller 3000–4000 models are ideal for method feeder fishing, while 5000–6000 or even larger types were developed specifically for casting-out boilie fishing, or even for long-distance casting. Larger spools not only hold more line but also improve casting ability, which is particularly advantageous during open water fishing.
The Delphin range is primarily built on models with excellent value for money, which already offer a premium feel in the mid-range. The Nevis reels are favorites among Hungarian anglers, standing out with their reliable operation and simple handling. The Japanese Shimano has been at the forefront of innovation for decades, and their baitrunner models are famous for their sophisticated technology, long lifespan, and precise drag system. Haldorádó's own developed reels were specifically adapted to Hungarian conditions and local methods – an ideal choice for both feeder and boilie anglers.
